DETECTIVES are studying CCTV images in a bid to catch criminals behind a cash machine fraud in Derry.
A ‘Cash trapping’ device was removed by police from ATM on Buncrana Road today.
Police say enquiries underway to establish how long it was there and who placed it.
With cash-trapping, the criminal inserts a device that holds on to any cash requested from an ATM – and the criminal then retrieves that cash once the customer leaves.
Customers often walk away thinking the machine is broken – or there’s a fault in the bank system.
But instead their money has been withdrawn, stored in a trap inserted in the machine and the thieves pocket the money once the customer has walked away.
