THE parish priest of a Co Derry village has warned parents to be on their guard against their children getting hooked on drugs.
Fr Andrew Dolan said Bellaghy was in the grip of drug dealers peddling their deadly wares to kids.
“It is a dirty game and we need to try and prevent others getting involved in it,” said the priest.
“That’s where strong parental concern is essential. They need to keep a tight eye on their friends.”
He added that it was known that deadly Class A heroin was circulating in surrounding villages.
“A lot of young people involved in this are not in front of me at Sunday Mass. They have an alternative lifestyle.
“Never has there been more education and yet somehow people seem to think that they will be alright.
“That is a mystery to me,” he told The Irish News.
The Bellaghy parish said that some young people, both users and dealers, were not aware of the consequences to their health of taking drugs and the possibility of getting a criminal conviction.
“They don’t realise the trouble they are bringing onto themselves, both in terms of their health and safety.”
