A 22-year-old man has been charged with arson with intent to endanger life following an attack on a flat last week.
He is due to appear at Derry Magistrates’ Court this morning for a first remand hearing.
The attack took place on Friday around 10.30 pm in a third floor flat at Bayview Terrace on Asylum Road.
There was no-one in the flat at the time but residents in the adjoining flats had to be evacuated.
“Extensive damage was caused to the interior of the property,” police said.
“There was nobody in the flat at the time but a number of residents in neighbouring flats had to be evacuated during the incident.”
Fire chiefs said working smoke alarms had undoubtedly saved the lives of residents in other flats.
