IT is back to the drawing board for Derry City and manager Peter Hutton after they took a pounding last night at Tallaght Park.
Shamrock Rovers beat the Candystripers 4-1 which means Derry still have not won in the league since April.
The Brandywell team will need to regroup before Friday night’s game away to Drogheada.
Pat Fenlon’s Rovers win puts them within four points of the top spot in the SSE Airtricity Premier Division League.
But the defeat leaves Hutton’s men now with eight defeats in 16 games, with only three wins under their belts all season.
Pat Fenlon’s unbeaten start to the season continued as the Hoops smashed the Candystripes to move four points from the summit
Drennan pened the scoring after a dangerous ball across the box found its way to Kieran Marty Waters after 11 minutes.
Waters turned his man and found Drennan, who slotted home from close range to put the home side ahead.
Derry’s chances of getting back into the game were dashed when captain Ryan McBride was sent off for a dangerously high tackle on Pat Cregg two minutes later.
Gary McCabe made it two-nil to Rovers just after half time.#
Brandon Miele hit a perfectly weighted pass to set him up for a one on one with the goalkeeper.
And when the keeper hit the ground, McCabe took it round him and fired home.
Then Waters made it 3-0 after rifling a shot past Derry keeper Gerard Doherty’s left hand.
There was confusion on the pitch when Miele went and scored past Doherty when he looked suspiciously offside but the linesman didn’t give it.
Both teams were 10-men a piece when Drennan got a red card for a revenge push on a Derry City player in front of the referee.
The Candystripes got a consolation goal late on through Ryan Curra.
But it was all too little too late for Hutton’s men who are now on a downward spiral, with confidence low and a lack of goals preventing them from turning round their fortunes.
