NIE say around 2,600 homes are without power in Creggan and the Brandywell areas.
It says engineers are currently on site to investigate the problem.
The power out is believed to have been caused by a third party and not by an NIE fault.
No details have been given as yet by NIE as to how long it will take to restore power.
