POLICE: ‘SINISTER ELEMENTS’ ORCHESTRATING VIOLENCE IN DERRY

Chief Inspector Andy Lemon says “sinister elements” guiding violence in Derry

POLICE say “sinister elements” are orchestrating rioting on the streets of Derry in recent nights.

They say a number of young people have been arrested and are now “tragically facing a criminal record which could negatively impact on their future in relation to travel, work and education”.

Said Chief Inspector Andy Lemon: “Even more worrying is the realistic threat of these young people seriously injuring themselves when they are dealing with dangerous articles such as petrol bombs and heavy masonry.

“Unfortunately these actions are often orchestrated by more sinister elements within our community, who show no regard for the safety or future of our young people.

“The City as a whole, especially the communities of the Bogside and Galliagh, have no desire to see burning blockades, petrol bombs and the future of their young people being thrown away.

“Police, along with the local community, will continue to take proactive action to deter and prevent future disorder in the city as we work in partnership to keep people safe.”
