SECTARIAN thug ‘Daryl Proctor’ was released on bail by a court today after he was formally charged with the murder of Paul McCauley in Derry nine years ago.
The 24-year-old UFF supporter was granted bail despite police objections that he may interfere with witnesses and impede the murder inquiry.
Mr McCauley died nine years after he was severely beaten in a sectarian attack in the city. He died last month in a care facility.
The sectarian thug was arrested in the Fountain area of the city on Thursday.
‘Proctor’ is now living under his new name of John McClements.
He appeared at Derry Magistrates’ Court this morning, Saturday, July 18.
Mr McCauley’s family were in the public gallery as ‘Proctor’ was led into the dock.
Six years ago, ‘Proctor’ was sentenced to 12 years in jail after he admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent to cause Mr McCauley grievous bodily harm.
‘Proctor’ – who was just two weeks short of his 16th birthday when he took part in the attack – was linked to the loyalist mob attack by a baseball cap which was found at the scene by police.
His DNA was found on the cap along with Mr McCauley’s blood.
Mr McCauley was 29 and attending a barbecue at Chapel Road in July 2006, when a group of up to 15 people attacked Mr McCauley and two of his friends.
After the assault, the group made off in the direction of Irish Street.
