GAA: Brian McIver has insisted that Derry has the talent to succeed in the future and has called on supporters to continue to get behind the team to ensure that success follows.
McIver resigned following Derry’s defeat to Galway at the weekend which ended their championship aspirations for 2015.
Derry had been narrowly defeated by Donegal in the Ulster SFC semi-final in a game many pundit Derry could and possibly should have won.
They responded with a good win over Wexford, but they came unstuck in Salthill last weekend and McIver decided it was time for him to step aside.
McIver may still receive a ban from the GAA after he launched a blistering attack on the referee following Saturday’s loss.
However, McIver has thanked his players and staff for their commitment during his tenure and says he has no doubt the current crop of players can bring success to the county over the next few years.
In a statement McIver said, ““I want to pay a special tribute to our players. They have worked extremely hard during my term.
“With continued hard work, I have no doubt that they have the ability and the commitment to bring them the success which they deserve in future.
“I always felt that this was a three to five year project and I would have loved to have been in a position to help them push on.
“However, my frustration on Saturday has convinced me that now is the right time for me to step down.
“I know these players will continue to push on and I wish them the very best of luck in the future.
