DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit are searching the home of leading Derry dissident republican leader Gary ‘Donzo’ Donnelly.
The searches are over an INLA ‘show of strength” over the death of Peggy O’Hara.
Mr Donnelly is currently an independent councillor on the new Derry City and Strabane District Council.
He has defended the paramilitary display and the firing of shots over Peggy O’Hara’s coffin.
The searches by boilers suited members of the Tactical Support Group is being conducted at a property in the Creggan area.
Police are looking for firearms and paramilitary style clothing.
Shots were fired over the coffin of Peggy O’Hara in the Templegrove area of the city last Wednesday.
At her funeral on Saturday up to 60 masked men and women in paramilitary dress took part in the procession.
Her family said Peggy O’Hara had requested such a funeral send off.
Mrs O’Hara was mother of INLA hunger striker Patsy. She died following a short illness last week.
The DUP hit out at the displays in Derry and questioned the police over their actions.
A DUP delegation earlier this week met the PSNI’s deputy chief constable to voice their anger at the lack of police response to the paramilitary displays.
Only one police landrover with a video camera mounted on the roof was visible at the funeral.
No police helicopter was deployed with the PSNI stating it had a lack of resource as it was dealing with a bomb alert the same day in Lurgan.
