DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Rape Crime Unit say they are no longer investigating a report that a teenage girl was the victim of a serious sexual assault in the city last week.
Last Sunday, the PSNI said that it was reported to officers that a 17-year-old girl was in the area of St Columb’s Park around midnight on Friday when she was approached by an unknown male and seriously sexually assaulted.
The alleged attacker was said to have been in his 30s.
At the time, Detective Inspector Lynne Knox of the Rape Crime Unit said: “I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area at the time of this incident to contact Police on the non-emergency number 101.
“Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information anonymously, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them on 0800 555 111.”
However, PSNI Detective Inspector Lynne Knox said tonight, Friday, July 31: “We have conducted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the report.
“We are no longer treating it as a crime and we are not looking for anyone else as part of the investigation.”
It is not known if the teenage girl will now face any further police action over the report of sexual assault.
