policePOLICE are on the trail of a 20-stone man who stole a knife from a butcher’s shop in Derry.

The incident occurred at around 4.25pm on Saturday,  July 31, when the man entered the premises on Clooney Terrace and demanded a knife from staff.

Staff in the shop told him he couldn’t have a knife.

Police say the roly poly thief then walked behind the counter and grabbed a large Nella red-handled steak knife measuring 12 inches in length.

The thief then left the shop, making his way across the street and down the steps beside Clooney Hall.

Inspector Colin Hamilton said the man, who spoke with a Southern accent, was described as being six foot tall, in his late 20s, heavy set, close to 20 stone with dark short hair wearing ripped jeans on the back pocket.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact police on the 101 non-emergency number.

Alternatively information can re relayed through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
