POLICE have recovered a gun which was found during security operation in the early hours of this morning.
Detectives from the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit probing ‘violent dissident republican activity’ carried out searches in the Melvin Road and Ballycolman Estate areas of Strabane on Tuesday night.
Army bomb experts were also at the scene over fears a device may have been found.
However, after the operation ended at 2 am, police said a firearm was taken away for forensic examination.
Police have apologised for any inconvenience caused during the overnight clearance operation.
Last weekend, police were alerted to a suspicious object in the local cemetery.
After 48 hours, the area was declared safe after a deadly mortar bomb device was uncovered in the cemetery.
The target of the attack was a passing police patrol.
Residents were furious after elderly people in their 80s had to be evacuated from their homes.
Grieving families also could not access the cemetery to visit the graves of loved ones.
