SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has written to EU Commissioner Phil Hogan calling on him to help struggling dairy farmers.
The Derry politicians said: “Our dairy farmers have been facing a mounting crisis over recent months with falling milk prices threatening their livelihoods.
“The collapse in milk prices is a global problem and Sinn Féin has been to the fore in helping our dairy farmers.
“Sinn Féin Agriculture Minister O’Neill has been meeting with farmers and banks regularly to do everything she can to support the dairy sector.
“She has also repeatedly called on EU Agriculture Commissioner to intervene to help struggling dairy farmers by increasing the EU intervention price, which has been at the same level since 2008.
“I have now written to Commissioner Hogan supporting the call for the intervention price to the raised in order to address the current crisis.
“I am also calling on the Commissioner to meet with Michelle O’Neill as a matter of urgency to outline what steps he is taking to support the dairy industry.”
