A SECURITY alert is underway this morning in Derry following reports of an explosion in a bin.
Police received reports of a loud bang in the Skeoge Road area at 11.45 pm on Tuesday night.
Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan said: “Reports of a loud bang were received at about 11.45pm last night.
“Officers attended the area and it appeared something inside a bin had exploded.
“Further daylight checks of the area are now being conducted.
“The Skeoge Road is closed between the Glengalliagh roundabout and the Buncrana Road. Members of the public should avoid the area.”
Army Technical Officers are at the scene examined the remnants of the bin and in case of any secondary devices which may have been left.
A forensic follow up search is underway for clues to those behind the bin bomb.
