ELDERLY residents had to be evacuated from their sheltered home last over a huge bonfire in the Bogside area of Derry.
The residents from Alexander House were moved over fears the fire may have got out of control due to its close proximity to their building.
They were force to stay with family relatives overnight.
Around 1,000 people gathered near Derry’s Walls when the bonfire was lit around 11.30 pm.
The bonfire is located close to the Walls overlooking the Bogside.
As a security precaution, police sealed off the part of the Walls which overlooked the bonfire site.
A number of stones were thrown at police officers but no injuries have been reported.
