THE fire which broke out this morning in a row of terraced houses in Derry’s Fountain area was started accidentally.

It broke out at a property in George’s Street earlier this morning around 9.30 am.

Smoke billowed out of the upstairs windows of the unoccupied house.

Police sealed off the area while fire crews tackled the blaze and prevent it spreading to other properties in the street.

It is understood the property was unoccupied at the time.

Two fire engines and six firefighters in breathing apparatus attended the scene to stop the blaze spreading to other properties.

The fire started in an upstairs rear bedroom.

Kevin Lynch of the Fire and Rescue Service said he did not believe anyone was inside the house at the time.

The fire is being treated as accidental.
