A new waste recycling facility recently opened in the Strahans Road area of Strabane has been shortlisted for no less than four accolades in the prestigious Sustainable Ireland Awards.
The awards acknowledge the achievements of individuals and organisations across all sectors in promoting environmental sustainability and the winners will be announced on September 9th at a ceremony in Belfast.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Elisha McCallion, praised the work that has gone into the design and delivery of the state of the art new facility, which has become the central recycling site for the Strabane area since opening last year.
“I am delighted to see the centre is already making such a significant difference to the local environment.
“To be shortlisted in four categories is fantastic and a real tribute to the work of all involved in the project, from the design team to the staff delivering the services on the ground.
“It’s vital that we are all more aware of environmental issues and centres such as those at Strahans Road provide us with the services and facilities to do our bit when it comes to the responsible disposal of waste. I would like to wish the team all the very best of luck, I really hope their work is recognised on the night.”
The newly constructed Strahans Road Waste facility opened in December 2014 replacing a former amenity site at Carricklee and a waste transfer Station in Newtownstewart.
The new waste recycling/transfer facility provides increased capacity for more segregation and recycling of additional materials, and greater convenience for the public in terms of depositing waste.
The centre plays a key role in meeting the statutory European Union targets and obligations for waste management in the council district and also assists in meet the non-statutory targets set out in the Waste Management Plan for the region.
The £12.4m project was completed ahead of schedule to the highest industry standards, as acknowledged in the shortlist for Sustainable Building Project of the Year.
It also gained recognition in the category of Environmental Project of the Year, and for Best use of Renewable Energy Sources. Derry City and Strabane District Council is also up for the Council Award for Excellence in Waste Management.
