THE Waterside Half Marathon has been hailed a huge success after almost 2,000 runners came out in force yesterday to take part in the popular annual sporting event.
The new route proved hugely popular with the participants and the good weather conditions all added to the fantastic atmosphere of the occasion.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Elisha McCallion paid tribute to everyone who participated in the event by extending her congratulations to all participants.
“What a fantastic achievement for everyone involved. This was a fantastic event I loved every minute of it.
“It was very inspiring to see so many runners of all ages and various abilities taking part.
“So much training, hard work and dedication has gone into preparing for the event and its very moving to see people crossing the finish line and achieve their goal – well done to everyone involved, you should feel very proud,” she said.
The Mayor also acknowledged the role of the organisers Derry City and Strabane District and the support agencies in hosting such a successful event.
The event saw a fantastic turnout, with a full entry quota met well in advance of the big day, and the weather conditions on the day meant it was perfect for the athletes of all ages and abilities who took part in the 13.1 mile course.
Mick Clohisey, of Raheney Shamrock’s, clinched the Male title while City of Derry Spartans, Catherine Whoriskey, secured the Female title, with Inishowen’s Karol Doherty securing the Wheelchair race title.
Mayor Cllr Elisha McCallion extending her congratulations to the winners said it was important to acknowledge all those participating.
“I would like to congratulate Mick Clohisey, Catherine Whoriskey and Karol Doherty for securing the top titles in fantastic taking times.
“And I would like to extend my congratulations to every runner who took part in either the relay event or the full half marathon, in achieving whatever goal they set for themselves.
“The city’s new running craze was apparent in the number of community led fitness and running groups so well represented in the rainbow of team colours on display.
“I would like to say a big thanks to all the marshals, volunteers and event staff for ensuring that the day went so well, considering the new route. And I would also like to thank everyone who took part on behalf of my official chosen charity Alzheimer’s Society – events such as this make such a difference in raising much needed funds for valuable causes,” she concluded.
