MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Elisha McCallion has welcomed the establishment of a new lecture series to Derry promoting the work of some of the world’s leading artists and thinkers.
The inaugural Seamus Deane Honorary Field Day Lecture is scheduled to take place at the Playhouse, Artillery Street, Derry, on Saturday 12 September at 7pm.
Delivered by Seamus Deane himself, the lecture is entitled: “Republics that were and might be”.
Mayor, Cllr McCallion said she was delighted to see this lecture series coming to Derry. She said it had huge potential in attracting artists from across the world who are interested in hearing about our unique history and talent.
“I am delighted that Field Day has launched details of the lecture series and recognised the importance of celebrating the work of local artists such as Seamus Deane. The city’s relationship with the Field Day theatre company began in 1980 and as part of our year of culture in 2013 we celebrated the Return of Field Day as a highlight event in the cultural calendar. The calibre of this lecture series is a tremendous legacy and presents us with a special opportunity for the city. I wish the lecture series every success and know it will be of huge appeal both locally and internationally” she said.
The event will be introduced by Professor Joe Cleary of NUI Maynooth and will include a questions and answers session immediately afterwards. The lecture series will be published in the annual Field Day review. Tickets for the lecture cost £5 or £3 concessionary and can be booked directly by contacting the Playhouse atwww.derryplayhouse.co.uk.
