SINN Fein representatives, led by Derry MLA Maeve McLaughlin, have had “frank and honest discussions” with new Ulster University Vice-Chanchellor, Paddy Nixon and Magee Provost, Deirdre Heenan on Campus expansion.
Maeve McLaughlin said afterwards: “A frank and honest discussion covering all aspects of the Magee case for expansion took place.
“We emphasised the point that expansion of Magee remains critical to the economic and social regeneration of Derry and the wider North West (NW).
“We are hopeful that the new Ulster University (UU) leadership will pledge a genuine commitment to Derry and the NW and that this commitment will be made public and delivered on.
“Sinn Féin has worked hard over a number of years to ensure that a robust business case for expansion was produced and we now want to see that made a priority by DEL Minister Stephen Farry in conjunction with a public commitment to Derry by UU.
“We made it clear that this is not simply about numbers but about types of courses the city needs and how they link into our economic opportunities.
“We also need to take advantage of the huge prospects available to develop cross border regional opportunities with Derry and Magee as a gateway university city for the wider NW region.”
