DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit are quizzing four men arrested over dissident republican activity in Derry.
The men – aged 38, 42, 45 and 46 – were arrested after a car was stopped in the Ringfort Road area, in Hazelbank, on Thursday night.
Derry Daily can reveal the car was brought to a “hard stop” by specialist firearms officers from the PSNI’s Specialist Operation Branch (SOB) following a covert surveillance operation using an “aerial platform”.
The four dissident republican suspects are being questioned at the serious crime suite in Antrim police station.
TIU detectives, supported by officers from the specialist Tactical Support Group, later carried out a number of searches of properties at Bligh’s Lane and Beechwood Avenue under section 41 of the Terrorism Act.
Under search warrants granted by a judge, they are looking for any article connected with acts of terrorism, articles supporting dissident terrorism and potential munitions.
The men can be held for up to 48 hours before either being released or charged.
However, TIU detectives can apply to a judge for an extension to their detention in Antrim police station.
