ENVIRONMENT Minister Mark H Durkan has visited Foyle Down Syndrome Trust who have been allocated £7,011 funding through DOE’s Challenge Fund.
The Minister and SDLP Foyle MLA recently allocated the funding to Foyle Down Syndrome Trust which will help 23 young adults to convert a derelict site into their very own organic garden and wanted to see at first-hand how it will be spent.
Commending the project Mark H Durkan said: “It is tremendous to see people in Derry coming together to produce innovative schemes to enhance their local environment. I commend them for it.
“Recently I announced that 33 community groups across the North were successful in obtaining Challenge Funding for their projects.
“When I launched the fund, a key requirement for me was that not only would the local environment improve but that there had to be a tangible benefit for the local community.
“The Derry groups are delivering that in spades. I am thrilled to see today how Foyle Down Syndrome Trust will use this funding to educate many young people about their natural environment, whilst developing their own organic garden.”
Minister Durkan added: “I have pledged that all money raised from our 5p levy on carrier bags would be ploughed back into the environment. The Challenge Fund is a very successful way of doing that.”
The Challenge Fund is created via receipts from the levy on carrier bags.
