The late great playwright Brian Friel has been laid to rest in Glenties.

A large crowd gathered at his home in Greencastle earlier as the remains of the 86 year old were carried in a wicker coffin.

The late Mr Friel did not have a church service.

While he was born in Co Tyrone and raised in Derry, Friel’s mother, Mary McLoone was a native of Glenties where she worked at one time in the town’s Post Office.

He was educated at St Columb’s College in Derry, spent many of his childhood summers in Glenties.

He is survived by his wife Anne, daughters Mary (Bateman), Judy (Maher), Sally (Sultan) and son David and was predeceased by his son Paddy.

Among those in attendance at the funeral were actor and long-time friend of the playwright, Stephen Rea.
