MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Elisha McCallion paid a visit to the Brandywell today.
But it wasn’t to watch Derry City FC play in SSE Airtricty League.
The Sinn Fein Mayor wanted to see at first hand the demolition work that is being carried out to remove the Glentoran Stand.
The planned works commenced last week and are expected to last a number of weeks and are part of ongoing essential health and safety works being carried out at the stadium.
Visiting the site to observe progress earlier today, the Mayor Cllr McCallion, donned her hard hat and health and safety gear to view progress on the site saying she was pleased to see that the demolition work was at an advanced stage and on schedule.
She also welcomed news that the Brandywell is one of three key regeneration projects to receive funding from OFMDFM;s Social Investment Fund in the coming weeks, saying the project remained a key capital investment project for the city and district.
“I am delighted that three sports and community facilities in the Derry area – including the Brandywell Stadium, has been approved for funding through the Social Investment Fund.
“Once the letter of offer is received we can advance to the next stages of the project and help deliver this significant investment to provide better facilities, improve the local environment and increase the health and well being of those living and working in these areas,” she said.
