THE DUP has been criticised for failing to make any comment in the Asembly about the death last Friday of legendary playwright Brian Friel.
Born in Tyrone, brought up in Derry, Brian Friel died at his home in Donegal aged 86.
Glowing tributes were paid from around the world to the writer who was described him as having left a lasting impression through his work.
Before Assembly business earlier this week, the SDLP, UUP, Alliance and Sinn Fein members all took turns on the floor to pay tribute to Mr Friel.
But not a single MLA from the DUP made any comment in the chamber about the playwright’s passing.
SDLP East Derry MLA John Dallat said the no comment from the DUP showed the party “had not embraced the whole community” as they claim to do.
“It didn’t go unnoticed that no-one from the DUP gave a tribute to Brian Friel in the chamber,” said Mr Dallat.
“It’s extremely disappointing about a party in a key position of government but doesn’t have the capacity to stand on their feet and pay tribute to one greatest literary giants.
“The deafening silence from the DUP was apparent.”
Brian Friel was buried on Sunday in Glenties, Co Donegal.
