WORK is due to start on a trial basis at creating several new taxi ranks in Derry city centre.
At present there are only 28 spaces in the city centre for some 1,100 registered drivers.
The Department of Regional Development has agreed to make provision for taxi spaces at Lower Clarendon Street, Tesco Strand Road, Police Court Street and Shipquay Street.
The new spaces will allow independent drivers who don’t work for local taxi officers to avail of the spaces and gain access to more passengers.
