A SON has spoke out after his elderly mother was left badly shocked after her wedding was pulled from her finger during a savage burglary on her Co Derry home.
Police say four men entered her house on Queen’s Avenue in Magherafelt around 7.30 pm on Friday evening.
Two men ransacked her home while the other two remained with her in her bedroom. They left with her wedding ring and other items of jewellery.
Her son Ian McGuckin told Radio Ulster’s Stephen Nolan show today: “They took her jewellery that she had in a box.
“They took £20 pound out of her purse – all she had.
“Then the other fella grabbed her by the hands, and they ripped her wedding ring and her engagement ring off.
“They took her necklace with my father’s ring from around her neck.”
The officer investigating the incident described the burglary as “loathsome”.
Added Detective Sergeant David Halliwell: “Any crime in which older people are the victims is despicable but taking a treasured wedding band from the hand of an elderly lady is a particularly loathsome act.
“We believe the males involved in this incident were aged in their late teens and were wearing knitted hats with scarves around their faces.”
Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on the 101 non-emergency number.
