ARCHBISHOP Eamon Martin, the Derry-born head of Ireland’s Catholics, is to be receive of St Columb’s College’s Alumnus Illustrissimus award.
The prestigious honour is awarded to distinguished past pupils of the Buncrana Road college.
Former winners include Nobel laureates John Hume, the former SDLP leader and poet Seamus Heaney, European Cup winner Martin O’Neill, the late, great playwright Brian Friel and musician Paul Brady.
Dr Eamon Martin, a former President of the college who was brought up in the Pennyburn area of the city, will be presented with the award at the annual get-together of the St Columb’s Past Pupils’ Union at the City Hotel in Derry on Friday, November 6.
The Archbishop was a pupil at the school between 1973 and 1980 and its president from 2000 to 2008.
In 2013, Dr Martin was installed as Primate of the Catholic Church in Ireland.
