POLICE say that a 33-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were arrested in Derry last night.
It follows the search of a property at Altcar Park during which a small amount of suspected cannabis and an imitation firearm were found.
Both have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Superintendent Mark McEwan said: “It’s important to note that police were in the area carrying out searches to remove drugs from the streets when they were attacked by youths.
“The windscreen of a police landrover was damaged and paint bombs were thrown at police vehicles as officers then dealt with a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage in the Galliagh area.
“We are also investigating a report that a number of windows at a nearby primary school were broken.
“Police will continue to work with the local community to keep people safe and deal with issues of concern such as drug abuse and anti-social behaviour.
“Thankfully no one was hurt last night but this behaviour is simply unacceptable.”
He said that as many as 100 youths were involved in “large scale anti social behaviour, causing terror to the local community”.
St Paul’s Primary school had windows smashed by stone-throwing youths.
Street signs were pulled out by their roots from the ground, some traffic signs were either damaged or burned.
Pallets were set on fire and youths blocked roads with burning barricades.
SDLP councillor Brian Tierney said local residents had been “left terrified and frightened” in their own homes.
