DETECTIVES across Derry city and Co Derry are warning social media users to exercise caution over contacts they make online following attempts of ‘cyber blackmail’ .
The PSNI say in recently reported incidents, individuals have received demands for money after photographs were obtained from them and doctored.
“None of the individuals identified had provided any sensitive or compromising photographs of themselves,” said a spokesperson.
“No money was handed over.
“In the cases under investigation, separate social media platforms were used.
“The blackmail threats came after contacts had spent some time building up relationships with the people involved.
“Our advice is to be wary of who you befriend over the internet.
“Also, do not be persuaded to provide intimate photographs or share personal information.
“If you become a victim of this type of scam, do not respond to the blackmailer’s demands, but report the issue to the police and the relevant social networking site.”
