A working smoke alarm saved a woman from serious injury after Hallowe’en ghouls set off fireworks in her Co Derry flat.
The Fire Service said crews responded to a report of a fire at a flat at Sandy Braes, Magherafelt on Tuesday.
“Fireworks, which had been pushed through the letter box went off, and generated a large amount of smoke in the flat,” said a spokesman.
“Firefighters led a 25-year-old woman to safety. Smoke alarms were activated by the smoke in the flat.
“Fire crews from Magherafelt station attended the incident.”
Police in Magherafelt are now investigating the incident.
They have repeatedly warned over the years about the dangers of fireworks in the wrong hands, particularly those who light fireworks and push them through letter boxes.
If caught, those responsible could face criminal charges in court.
