SDLP Regional Development Spokesperson and East Derry MLA John Dallat has tabled a motion in the NI Assembly calling for a capital investment plan for transport infrastructure in the North West.
Speaking ahead of the Assembly debate, the East Derry MLA said: “Increasingly, it is argued that Northern Ireland must generate its own economic prosperity and I agree with that.
“However, the North West is less attractive to potential inward investors because of the poor transport infrastructure.
“This is a legacy issue that will never be addressed by yearly allocations from the Executive.
“There must be a collaborative strategy from Executive Departments for capital investment in roads, railways, airports and one which demands the support of the British and Irish Governments and the European Union.
“There is clear evidence that if the transport infrastructure issues are tackled we can begin to address the causes of deprivation.
“Already we can measure the success of investment in the Belfast-Derry railway which is increasingly bringing prosperity to Derry and the surrounding area.
“When finished the Belfast-Derry railway will be a major factor in enticing investors to locate in the North and North West.
“The availability of decent road infrastructure is critical to keeping business costs down when moving people, goods and services. It is encouraging that the A5 is a factor in the current talks but time is not on our side. T
“There has also been little progress in the development of the A6 and especially the bypass at Dungiven which I believe is now into its 15th year of planning.
“If we do nothing, the North West will never catch up. Transport infrastructure needs investment and needs to be prioritised.
“Let us be positive and build on our successes. It can and will happen and this Assembly can make it happen if there is the will and the way.”
