IT has taken firefighters over a week but finally they have able to extinguish the blaze at the Brickkiln recycling centre.
Dozens of firemen have been working on the site in shift patterns to first stop the blaze spreading and then try and put it out.
The major problem facing crews was that a building on site had over 10,000 tonnes of rubbish stored inside.
The alarm was first raised on the morning of last Wednesday, November 11 by a security guard at the site on Electra Road in Maydown.
In a statement this evening, the Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire has been fully extinguished and the smoke plume which had originated from the fire is no longer an issue to residents in the area.
“We would like to thank the members of the local community for their patience as Firefighters dealt with a large fire at waste management facility premises in the area.
“We would also like to thank all of the partner agencies for their involvement throughout this operation.
“NIFRS worked closely with the site owners, contractors, NI Environment Agency, Police Service of Northern Ireland, Public Health Agency, Northern Ireland Electricity and Derry City and Strabane District Council throughout the management of this incident.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this stage.”
