THE Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Elisha McCallion, has announced that she will be staging a special two-day festive welcome event in December for people across the district.
The Mayor’s Christmas Welcome will take place on December 19th and 20th and the series of performances and activities, which will take place in the atmospheric surrounds of the historic Guildhall, will showcase the fantastic singing talents of singers and musicians from across Derry and Strabane.
And Santa himself might even make an appearance at the festivities, the perfect opportunity for children with any last minute requests for their Christmas list!
Launching the event, Mayor McCallion said her special Christmas Welcome would be the highlight of this year’s Christmas programme. “Throughout my term in office I aim to celebrate all the people of the city, and what better way than by opening up the Guildhall for a special musical event for all.
“The Guildhall provides the perfect backdrop for a Christmas celebration and we have a packed line up of talent taking to the stage in the Main Hall over the two days.
“And I’m even expecting a special visit from Santa who will be dropping in for some pre-Christmas fun in the story-telling igloo.
“I want to extend a warm welcome to everyone to come along and get into the festive spirit.”
Among the many musical groups taking part are the Colmcille Ladies Choir, the Encore Contemporary Choir, Strabane Concert Brass Band, the Doire Calgach Singers, the Pink Ladies Choir, the Long Tower Folk Group and many more.
The Guildhall also welcomes some seasonal storytellers all the way from the North Pole who invite you to join them in their cosy igloo for stories of festive wonder.
There will be some fun children’s Christmas crafts and heart-warming refreshments available.
The event will take place over the course of the two days, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th, from 1pm – 6pm, and people can call into the Guildhall to enjoy some of the fantastic local talent on display.
