MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Elisha McCallion, welcomed hundreds of local volunteers to the Guildhall at the weekend to celebrate their ongoing work on behalf of the community.
The Mayor’s Volunteer Recognition Event took place in the Guildhall on Saturday evening when over 200 local volunteers nominated by agencies and organisations across the Council area were invited for a special dinner in their honour.
Welcoming them to the event, Mayor McCallion said she was thrilled to be able to celebrate the work which often goes unnoticed but which has such an important role in the life of the district.
“I’m delighted to be able to celebrate the work of the hundreds of volunteers who dedicate their time to others, so often without reward or recognition.
“During my time as Mayor I want to take the opportunity to thank the people who are making a difference every day, through working in the community, supporting and caring for our elderly, welcoming our visitors, and assisting the vulnerable in the many vital roles which our volunteers fill.
“Without them many of our local organisations could not provide the key services needed in our communities.
“On behalf of the people of Derry and Strabane I want to thank you all for your tireless work and dedication which is an example to us all.”
The volunteers invited to the event were all nominated specially for their work by local groups and organisations.
The Mayor presented all those nominated with a special certificate acknowledging their contribution, and the evening concluded with music and entertainment in the Main Hall.
The Mayor will also be opening the Guildhall up to the general public for a special Christmas Welcome event taking place over two days on December 19 and 20.
Everyone is invited to come along and enjoy performances by some of the best local choirs, singers and musicians1pm – 6pm – and there may even be a special visit from Santa himself.
