DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team have released a 26-year-old man arrested as part of their inquiries into the murder of Paul McCauley in Derry nine years ago.
The suspect was arrested on Monday in Coleraine.
He has now been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Mr McCauley was attacked by a loyalist mob after a barbecue at Chapel Road in the Waterside area.
He sustained severe head injuries in the sectarian attack and never regaining consciousness.
Paul tragically lost fight for life in a care facility in June this year. He was aged 38.
Police also detained a second 26-year-old man in Coleraine this morning, Tuesday, December 8.
He remains in custody at the local police station being questioned about Mr McCauley’s murder.
The senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey said the latest arrest brings the number of people who have been arrested since Mr McCauley died last June to 10.
To date, one man, Daryl Proctor, has been charged with murder and another reported to the Public Prosecution Service.
DCI Harvey said police enquiries into the murder are very much ongoing and he appealed to those with information to come forward.
DCI Michael Harvey, the senior MIT detective leading the investigation, said police enquiries into the murder were “very much ongoing.”
“I would like to thank those people who have so far come forward to assist us since Paul’s death.
“I would continue to ask anyone with any information to contact detectives at Maydown police station on the non-emergency number 101 or use the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
“The momentum in this investigation is continuing.
“Detectives are available to speak with anyone who decides they want to talk to us.
“Even after nine and a half years, it is not too late to do the right thing and come forward.”
