GENEROUS donations from the public to the Mayor’s “Giving Tuesday” initiative have been given out to local community representatives across the Council district.
They will now be distributed to vulnerable people and those in need in their communities.
Extending her heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated to the campaign, Mayor, Councillor Elisha McCallion she was overwhelmed by the generosity of people in Derry and Strabane.
“Once again the people of Derry and Strabane came up trumps and donated generously to my Giving Tuesday campaign.
“I would like to extend a huge thanks to everyone who contributed in any way, whether it was donating money, gifts or vouchers or by giving up their time to help at the collection centres or with the distribution, I am very grateful.
“I know it’s a difficult time for many people and many are under a lot of financial pressure but despite this people are always keen to give to those less fortunate than themselves,” she said.
Representatives from areas across the council area including the Waterside, Outer North and South, Strabane District and Triax areas met with the Mayor in the Guildhall this week to allocate the items and sort them for distribution.
“Local community groups across the city and district will be distributing the items in their communities in the run up to Christmas.
“I sincerely hope that the initiative will go some way to help take the pressure off some families in our city and district and that it will help make Christmas a special time for them,” she said.
The Mayor added that community led initiatives such as these are a wonderful way of involving the community in the development of their area.
“It gives people a sense of ownership and pride in what can be achieved and also encourages us to focus on helping others living and working in our community.”
