RESIDENTS in the Hatmore/Kylemore area have warned neighbours – and other residents in the city – that creeper burglaries are back operating in the city after an incident at the weekend.
Two men involved in the incident in Hatmore were captured on CCTV installed by local resident Niall Doran.
“On Sunday Morning I was greeted by an upset neighbour at my door who explained that her purse and other items where stolen from her car parked overnight on the driveway in Hatmore,” Niall told Derry Daily.
“She was looking to see if we saw anything suspicious or anyone lurking in the street in the early hours of Saturday morning.
“I was unaware of any such activity but wanted to assist as best as I could. On examination of CCTV footage at my home I trawled through the early hours of the morning, only to find the two young thieves walking around the street and also brazenly entering my property to check for any opportunities to thieve property and the cars.
“I was disgusted to see that yet again this type of behaviour is taking place in our area and is being encouraged by the fact that there is an open lane at the bottom of the street which was used as the escape route for the thieves.”
Niall went on: “I know that great work has started by Councillor Micheal Cooper to get these lanes gated and closed off which I and other residents would welcome greatly, but in my opinion this process is too slow. We need the gates immediately in order to engineer out this anti-social and criminal behaviour in our area. I am a great believer that this will help immensely.
“I am writing this to alert other residents to this activity and to be aware, don’t drop your guard. We are in a new year now and the last thing we want is to play into the hands of these vermin. The days of leaving the front door ajar for visitors and leaving the car unlocked in the driveway are over.”
