SINN Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell has warned people in Derry to be on the guard following reports of oil thieves operating in the Creggan area.
He said thieves struck yesterday in Carrickreagh Gardens and stole oil from a woman’s tank she had to keep her house warm over the winter period.
Said Cllr Campbell: “She was a bit concerned last night when she saw a white van going up and down the street.
“This morning she discovered that her oil was missing. The woman is totally distraught- she saved the money up to get that oil.
“This isn’t the first time oil thieves have struck as a number of months ago Creggan Heights and Rinmore Drive were targeted and oil stolen.
“They then came back a number of weeks ago to these same streets.
“They now seem to have spread out to different streets in this community so I am appealing to people to be aware and keep an eye on your neighbours homes and report anything suspicious.”
Anyone who notices suspicious persons in gardens or vehicles in their area should report it to the police
