Woman treated in Altnagelvin Hospital after serious house blaze

A WOMAN is in a “critical” condition in Altnagelvin Hospital after was rescued from a serious house blaze.

She was transferred from Antrim Area Hospital to Derry’s accident and emergency department following yesterday evening’s blaze.

The 50-year-old woman is currently being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Up to 30 firefighters were involved in dealing with the serious house blaze.

Fire crews rescued the woman from the burning house at Woodcroft Brae in Ballymena.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus entered the house around 6.30 pm yesterday evening and found the woman in a smoke-filled, downstairs room.

NIFRS’s Archie McKay said it is believed the woman was unconscious when she was rescued.

Police are currently investigating how the fire started.

Said Mr McKay: “The fire officer in charge ordered an attack on the fire with two water jets and committed breathing apparatus wearers to the house.

“One of the breathing apparatus teams found and rescued a woman from the burning house.

“The breathing apparatus teams continued to search as it was believed children may have been present in the house, but thankfully they were elsewhere during the fire.”

Mr McKay added: “29 firefighters from Ballymena, Antrim and Kilrea, two officers, four fire engines and a command vehicle attended the scene.

“Eight breathing apparatus sets and two water jets were required to bring the fire under control and extinguish it. The cause of the fire is under investigation. We wish the lady a speedy recovery.”

No damaged was caused to any nearby properties.
