SDLP East Derry MLA John Dallat has described the decision by the Fire and Rescue service to reject a request by Marie McCloskey for a new inquiry into the death of her fireman husband Joe McCloskey as “heartless”.
Mr McCloskey died responding to a fire at a hotel in Limavady 13 years ago.
The NIFRS’s decision to reject a new inquiry comes following an unprecedented report from the Attorney General.
In that report, John Larkin QC named the officer who he believes gave the fatal order that cost Mr McCloskey his life.
Said Mr Dallat: “Joe McCloskey was a courageous fire fighter who lived for the fire service that he served for many years.
“The fact that, with breath-taking haste, management have refused to support a new inquest and inquiry into his death is beyond comprehension.
“I am demanding that this request by the McCloskey family is heard by the full board of Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service who are tasked to oversee the service and improve the image of its senior management which was in disrepute at the time when this tragic incident occurred.
“Joe lost his life unnecessarily in circumstances which were entirely avoidable had his senior officers made the correct assessment of the situation.
“In their motto NIFRS state they want to be open and honest in communication with staff and stakeholders.
“They also claim to keep people safe and lead by example.
“If they are seriously committed to this then they must give the opportunity to the McCloskey family to have the circumstances clarified and those responsible for his death identified.
“The report of the Attorney General cannot be ignored and there is now a heavy responsibility on many people and not least the Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Service to allow Marie McCloskey and her family to draw closure to a tragedy which devastated their family and robbed them of a devoted husband and father.”
