SINN Féin Justice spokesperson Raymond McCartney has called on the PSNI to apologise in person to the family of Gerard Hampson.
It follows a report by the Police Ombudsman published today which said that ten police officers are to be disciplined over the former republican prison’s death.
Gerry Hampson’s body was found on the shores of Lough Neagh near Toomebridge, in January 2008 – six weeks after family of the Derry man reported the 53-year-old missing.
Ombudsman Dr Michael Maguire has recommended that 10 police officers be disciplined.
Police have issued an apology for the failings in its investigation.
Mr McCartney said: “There are many aspects of the Gerard Hampson case which raise serious concerns about the actions of the PSNI and their conduct in relation to the manner in which the Hampson family have been treated.
“I have asked my party colleagues on the Policing Board to raise these concerns with the Chief Constable.
“I believe that the PSNI need to show respect to the Hampson family and apologise to them personally.”
