PSNI chiefs say that a weapon has been found during a security alert at the city cemetery in Derry this evening.
The police operation at Lone Moor Road is ongoing and a security cordon is in place.
Families visiting loved ones’ grave had to be moved for their own safety during the operation.
British Army Technical Officers are currently at the scene examining the weapon.
Inspector Johnny Hunter said this eveing: “Searches in the area are continuing following the discovery of a weapon at the scene.
“Police will endeavour to bring the operation to a close as soon as we can.
“However, we will not take chances with the safety of the local community.
“We will continue in our work here until we are sure that the area is safe. ”
Inspector Hunter added: “I would ask anyone who has noticed any suspicious activity in the area recently to contact police at Strand Road on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. ”
