ARMY Technical Officers have carried out a number of controlled explosions during a security alert following the discovery of a weapon.
The alert was sparked after the discovery of a suspicious object at the City Cemetery in Derry on Lone Moor Road yesterday afternoon.
It’s understood the weapon was found inside a car parked at the lower section of the graveyard.
Said PSNI Inspector Johnny Hunter: “Searches in the area are continuing following the discovery of a weapon at the scene.
“Police will endeavour to bring the operation to a close as soon as we can.
“However, we will not take chances with the safety of the local community and we will continue in our work here until we are sure that the area is safe.”
“It’s absolutely disgraceful that anyone would use the cemetery in this way,” she said.
“A lot of people have come to visit their loved ones graves this afternoon and were unable to do so because of this weapon find.”
