BRITISH Army Technical Officers carried out a controlled explosion on a “viable pipe bomb type device” which was lobbed into the back yard of a house in Derry in the early hours of this morning.
Police evacuated residents from homes in Ebrington Street area around 12 10 am after the lethal object was found.
It is understood a family of three, including a very young child, were in the house at the ti.me.
A controlled explosion was carried out on the device around 5.30 am
Evacuated residents were allowed to shelter in the nearby Clooney Centre.
The area has now been declared safe and residents have been allowed to return to their homes and Emerson Street and Bond Street have been reopened.
Detective Sergeant Brian Reid of the PSNI’s Reactive and Organised Crime Branch said: “I would ask anyone with any information about this incident to contact detectives at Strand Road Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.
