A 27-year-old is receiving treatment in Altnagelvin Hospital after he sustained a serious head injury during an early morning assault in Derry.
The attack happened at Margaret Street in the Waterside area around 5 am this morning.
During follow up inquiries, two men, aged 31 and 37, were arrested over the attack.
Both remain in custody at Strand Road PSNI station.
They are being questioned under the 1861 Offences Against the Persons Act on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
Local police Inspector Colin Hamilton said the PSNI want to hear from anyone who saw or heard a disturbance in the area at the time to come forward.
