SDLP members have endorsed Councillor Gerry Mullan to contest the Assembly Elections in East Derry for the SDLP.
If elected he will take the place of John Dallat who has represented the constituency for 18 years.
Mullan was first elected to Limavady Borough Council in 2001 and won a seat on the new Causeway Coast and Glens Council in 2014.
Gerry was Mayor of Limavady in 2014 and currently serves as a director of Limavady Community Development Initiative (LCDI) as well as the Roe Valley Enterprise Company.
He also represented the SDLP in last year’s Westminster Election.
He said: “The SDLP has a long and distinguished record of service to the community in East Derry and I look forward to continuing that with the support of our six SDLP councillors and our outgoing Assembly Member John Dallat who has served with courage and dedication, always putting people first.
“It would be an honour for me to take up the many campaigns to which John Dallat dedicated himself, particularly the improvement of road and rail in our constituency and the development of jobs, health and education.
“As a long term Councillor I hope to bring with me a wealth of experience which will combine the best of local and Assembly government.
“Having spent half of my working life in public service I am well placed to respond to the needs of the people and represent them on a whole range of issues.
“I hope to play a central role in the development of the Assembly for the common good of all our people.
“I am delighted that Gerry has been endorsed by the party. I want to see the entire electorate in East Derry represented by someone who is committed to the welfare of people and has the creation of jobs and security of this and future generations as a priority.
“Gerry is that person and he has the support of the entire SDLP and its membership as he contests this election.”
