SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has expressed his sadness at the death of one of Derry City Football Club’s favourite sons after attending yesterday’s funeral of Mark Farren in Greencastle, Co. Donegal.
Mark, 33, passed away on Wednesday morning after a battle against the ravages of an aggressive brain tumour.
Mr Durkan said: “The funeral showed the deep sadness there is at the loss of a young man who brought so much happiness to others through his skills and dedication.
“Mark Farren was inspired and inspirational on the pitch and showed the same spirit and determination in his battle with cancer.
“The loss of a young legend is not just felt by the football family or greater sports fraternity but right across a community that admires his prowess, modesty, fight and heroism.
“I hope that Mark’s family can take comfort and encouragement from the breadth and depth of sympathy which has been so widely expressed following his very sad death.”
Mark was Derry’s city all time record breaking goal scorer.
His former club Derry City have now retired his No 18 shirt as a mark of respect to the player and his family.
