THE PSNI has launched a major campaign try and halt the rise in burglaries across Derry.
The crackdown comes after the latest police figures showed there were 7,266 attacks on homes and businesses from last April to 25 January across the North of Ireland.
The total is up 2.1% over the previous year, including a rise of 3.7% in the number of incidents at residential properties.
Officers said they will mount vehicle checkpoints across Derry, search properties and deploy cash sniffer dogs during a four-week operation in a bid to crack down on burglaries.
They will also provide advice and information on how people can secure their premises and deter thieves.
Superintendent Simon Walls said: “Burglaries are a violation of the things people hold most dear – the possessions they’ve worked hard to buy and to enjoy as well as the items of sentimental value they cherish.
“Over the coming weeks, police intend to have a higher profile in communities, making sure any burglary hotspots are receiving increased attention.
“As part of the overall operational plan, we will also be mounting checkpoints on roads to clamp down on travelling criminals.
“We are continually striving to increase clearance rates and we believe that our focused patrol, prevention and investigative activity over the coming weeks will help to improve these figures.”
Police added that they will also be liaising with An Garda Siochana along the Derry/Donegal border during the operation.
