THE PSNI and Action Fraud are warning the public in Derry to be on their guard over personalised scam text messages being sent out by fraudsters.
In a statement they say: “The spoofed messages from ‘Photo Image’ use your first name and contain a link that leads to a page purporting to be from Tesco, claiming you have won a £500 gift card!
“If you get one of these messages, do not click on any links or download any files.
“These scams are designed to steal your personal information and could lead you vulnerable to other types of fraud that include identity theft.”
Some members of the public have reported that the text messages have appeared on their phones while they were browsing on the internet.
The advice from the PSNI and Action Fraud is to clear the browser history on your computer to stop hackers accessing material you have searched.
Other scams to watch out for are cold calls from crooks claiming their is a problem with their laptop.
The advice is not to give out any personal information to crooks over the phone, put the phone down and ring the PSNI on 101 or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 during weekdays (Mon to Fri) between 9 am and 6 pm.
